Calgary Flames 2015-16 Home Opener
One of the highlights from this year’s busy drumming season was the chance to work once again with our hometown hockey team – the NHL Calgary Flames. We had been fortunate enough to work with the Flames in the past when they asked us to be a part of their 2011-12 Home Opening game, which included a live performance on the ice with 4 members of Midnight Taiko as well as the Booming Tree Taiko duo from Edmonton.
We were excited to be asked to be part of their Home Opening event for this years 2015/2016 Home Opening game once again, this time involving a video shoot as well as performing live on the ice. Ben and John were chosen to participate in a very busy couple of weeks of filming and rehearsals to coincide with the home opener on October 7th, 2015. The filming took place a few weeks earlier and consisted of slow motion cameras with live pyrotechnics and shooting flames. The soundtrack is from the film Mad Max: Road Fury (2015) with the vision to create a high energy, high intensity video to play before the hockey players entered the ice. The filming took place at the Scotiabank Saddledome one evening from 8:00pm to 12:00am in order to work around the Saddledomes, the performers, the film crew, and the pyrotechnic crew’s busy schedules. It was a short, fun, and intense night and the final product is incredible, also in no small part to the Calgary Flames’ amazing production company. Check out the opening video below:
On the opening night, Ben and John were also asked to perform on the ice live, directly after the opening video played and as the hockey players were entering the ice. The Saddledome was filled to capacity at around 19,000 people, as well as the game being broadcast live on television. Needless to say, there was enough adrenaline and excitement for us to put on an energetic opening! You can catch glimpses of us on the broadcast footage below:
We loved working with the Calgary Flames and being asked to be a part of this year’s home opener was definitely the highlight of the season for us. Being able to work with such a professional organization really pushes us to become better and perform at a much higher level. We look forward to many more opportunities to collaborate with other organizations around Calgary and become a more integrated member of the community in this city. Thank you Calgary Flames, we’ll be rooting for you all the way to the Stanley Cup this season. Go Flames Go!
